Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signs executive order for reparations task force
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order Monday to establish a Reparations Task Force to develop a reparations plan for the city. According to the mayor’s office, the task force will conduct a study and analysis of policies that have affected Black Chicagoans from slavery to the present day. Based on this analysis, the task force will recommend remedies to racial inequities caused by such policies.

8-year-old boy shot in head at splash pad is making 'amazing progress': Sheriff
An 8-year-old boy who was shot in the head in a mass shooting at a Michigan splash pad is making "amazing progress" in his recovery, the local sheriff said. The 8-year-old, his 4-year-old brother and their mother were among nine people shot at the Brooklands Plaza splash pad in Rochester Hills on Saturday, according to officials. The suspect, Michael William Nash, allegedly fired 36 shots before fleeing the scene and then dying by suicide at his home, authorities said.

As the Israel-Hamas war continues, negotiations are apparently stalled to secure the release of hostages taken by the terrorist organization, and Israeli forces continue to launch incursions in the southern Gazan town of Rafah ahead of a possible large-scale invasion. The Israeli military is "weeks" away from wrapping up the main part of its controversial ground invasion in and around Rafah in southern Gaza, Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari told ABC News. "We are there to dismantle the military framework of the [Hamas'] Rafah Brigade," Hagari said on Monday.

Wildfire near LA spreads to more than 15,600 acres, sparking evacuations
A wind-whipped Southern California wildfire that started over the weekend ballooned to more than 15,600 acres on Monday, prompting the evacuation of more than 1,000 campers from a park, closing a popular recreation area on Father's Day and threatening a major freeway in and out of Los Angeles, authorities said. The Post Fire, which began after 2 p.m. PT on Saturday near Gorman, California, in the Tejon Pass area of Los Angeles County, saw flames jump from 5,000 acres to 14,625 acres by Sunday evening, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

2 killed, 14 injured in shooting at Juneteenth celebration in Texas; police searching for suspect
Police in Round Rock, Texas, are asking the public to help find the suspect in a shooting at a Juneteenth celebration that left two dead and 14 others injured. The incident unfolded when a fight broke out between two groups in Old Settlers Park at about 11 p.m. Saturday, Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said. The two people killed were identified by police on Monday as 33-year-old Lyndsey Vicknair and 54-year-old Ara Duke.

Indian man extradited to US in connection with alleged plot to assassinate Sikh separatist
An Indian national has been extradited to the United States to face charges he directed a plot to kill a critic of the Indian government in New York City. Nikhil Gupta is accused of paying a hit man to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a leader of Sikhs for Justice, who has been advocating for the creation of a sovereign Sikh state. Gupta, 52, was arrested in the Czech Republic late last year.

The 30-second spot, which will air in battleground states throughout the rest of June, trades clips of a smiling Biden greeting voters with shots of Trump scowling in court. Heat dome brings potentially historic temperatures to most of the nation
The Northeast and Midwest, including New York City and Boston, are bracing for what could be the hottest stretch of weather in 30 years this week as a sweltering heat dome settles over a large part of the nation. Over the next six days, 265 million people, or about 82% of the U.S. population, are likely to experience temperatures topping 90 degrees as the official first day of summer arrives on Thursday. An Excessive Heat Watch was already issued Sunday for parts of New England, including Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Attempted murder suspect escapes from custody in California
A man accused of attempted murder has escaped from custody in Southern California, according to authorities. Deshaun Stamps broke out from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga during an outside recreation period on Sunday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said. Stamps, 29, has been in custody for attempted murder since Jan. 30, 2023, the sheriff's office said.

The presidential election is taking up much of the political oxygen in 2024. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the Democrats' campaign arm for state legislative races, launched a $10 million spending blitz Monday to boost key state legislative candidates and campaigns across the country, according to plans shared first with ABC News. Dubbed the "Summer of the States" campaign, the investment marks the first time the DLCC is launching a push of this size at this point in an election cycle.

A Virgin Australia flight made an emergency landing in New Zealand after a "possible bird strike," the airline said in a statement. Flight VA 148 from Queenstown to Melbourne was diverted shortly after takeoff, the airline said on Monday. The Boeing 737 landed at Invercargill Airport, where it was met by emergency services, the airline said.

US soldier detained in Russia pleads partially guilty in court, local media reports
U.S. Army service member Gordon Black, who has been detained in Russia since early May, pleaded partially guilty to charges of theft during the second hearing of his ongoing trial in the Primorsky Court, Russian media reported Monday. In May, Black was detained in Vladivostok, Russia, in the Primorsky territory -- which borders North Korea and China -- on charges of criminal misconduct, the U.S. Army previously said. Black had been visiting his girlfriend in Russia and the two had a disagreement, Russian media reported.
