We have a terrific panel of experts for the next #Resilience Lunch + Learn is coming up June 12: Evaluating Compound #Flood Risk: Assessing Rainfall and Storm Surge in #NYC presented by Society of American Military Engineers NYC Post with U.S. Green Building Council Middle Atlantic + New England Regions as Education Partner. Register to join us ONLINE Wednesday, June 12, 12:00-1:30 PM ET.Attending this session live enables participants to earn 1.5 PDHs towards maintaining Professional Engineer licensure as well as 1.5 GBCI #CEUs and 1.5 AIA LUs.Panelists:·Laurian Farrell, Deputy Commissioner, Bureau of Coastal Resilience NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) ·Curtis Smith, Civil Engineer - Certified Floodplain Manager, Stantec· Rob Nairn, Principal, Baird & Associates·Keith R., Senior Engineering Scientist, ·M.Onur Kurum, Ph.D. P.Eng, Coastal Engineer / Numerical Modeler, Baird & Associates·Moderator: Maryia S., StantecCoastal flooding induced by severe storms poses significant risks, including coastal erosion, property damage, and loss of life. The generation of large storm surges from the effects of wind and pressure on coastal waters is well-documented, yet recent events like Hurricane Ida in the northeast United States and Hurricane Harvey in Texas have underscored the critical threat posed by extreme rainfall. Such events lead to intense urban flooding and overwhelm sewer systems, contributing to extensive overland flooding. While conventional flood risk analysis often includes storm surge factors, the integration of rainfall-runoff processes to evaluate comprehensive flood risk, accounting for both storm surge and rainfall-runoff, is a burgeoning research area. This presentation aims to elucidate the mechanisms of coastal flooding specific to the New York City area, employing advanced modeling techniques. We will detail our methodology for simultaneously accounting for storm surge and rainfall-runoff effects within a unified model. Highlighting a high-resolution micro-scale model of Queens, New York City, capable of resolving individual buildings while capturing broad regional tidal and storm surge dynamics of the mid-Atlantic bight, we will discuss hindcast results of the flooding during the hypothetical event. The application of such models in supporting engineering solutions will be explored. Here's the CORRECTED registration link! https://lnkd.in/euBN6jHGErik C.
